Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is the most common
cardiac defect in cats. It is an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance.
It can affect cats of any age.
At the present time, echocardiogram screening is the only method for
diagnosing HCM in the Bengal cat. TIBCS has negotiated a research
study, co-sponsored by the WINN Foundation to search for a genetic
marker for HCM in the Bengal cat. Identification of the gene mutation
will enable breeders to know prior to breeding that this cat is affected.
Through gene identification, this form of HCM has the potential to
eradicate the disease in the breed.
TIBCS has donated $5000 to the project to be conducted by Dr. Kate
Meurs at Washington State University. WINN Foundation will be matching
this $5000. This is only a portion of the funds needed for this research
study. More is needed.
TIBCS has established The Lightening Fund to raise funds for HCM research.

for more information. You do not need to be a member of TIBCS to donate. Also, check out the exciting raffle on that page for a Cat Wheel! This cat wheel was generously donated by The Cat Wheel Company for the Lightening Fund. Bengals LOVE cat wheels, and it is a great form of exercise, plus great entertainment for the owners watching them race the Grand Prix on their wheels!
